Sitting Bull
Sitting Bull united Hunkpapa Lakota resistance in the 1870s and turned the fight over the Black Hills into a lasting challenge to United States expansion.
Born January 1, 1831 / Died December 15, 1890
Around 1831, near the Grand River in present-day South Dakota, Sitting Bull was born into the Hunkpapa Lakota at a time when bison, kinship, and intertribal alliances structured plains life. He gained status through warfare, hunting, and spiritual authority rather than through any U.S. institution. Increasing pressure from forts, emigrant trails, and treaty negotiations made resistance the defining political question of his generation.
Sitting Bull opposed federal encroachment after the Fort Laramie treaties, drew followers during the crisis over the Black Hills, and played a central spiritual and political role in the Great Sioux War of 1876. His vision before the Battle of the Little Bighorn became part of Lakota memory of that victory over George A. Custer. After years of exile in Canada and later confinement, he was killed by Indian police in December 1890 during the tensions surrounding the Ghost Dance movement.
Sitting Bull's life remained tied to later debates over treaty rights, reservation policy, and the seizure of the Black Hills. The violence surrounding his death also stood close to the events that culminated at Wounded Knee, making him a central figure in the history of Native resistance to federal expansion.
