Gerald Ford

Gerald Ford used the presidency from 1974 to 1977 to manage Watergates aftermath, pardon Richard Nixon, and steady Cold War politics after constitutional crisis.

Born July 14, 1913 / Died December 26, 2006

On July 14, 1913, in Omaha, Nebraska, Gerald Ford was born as Leslie Lynch King Jr. before being raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, under the Ford name. He attended the University of Michigan, played football there, and later earned a law degree from Yale while coaching. Military service in World War II and long congressional experience made him a respected, if not charismatic, Republican leader.

Ford became vice president in 1973 after Spiro Agnew's resignation and then president in August 1974 when Richard Nixon resigned over Watergate. His pardon of Nixon in September 1974 was meant to stabilize the country but deeply damaged his own standing. Ford also pursued d?tente with the Soviet Union, signed the Helsinki Accords in 1975, and presided over the uneasy end of the Vietnam era.

Ford's presidency became a benchmark in debates over pardon power, post-scandal accountability, and the restoration of public trust after constitutional breakdown. The Helsinki framework and the long afterlife of Watergate both kept his short administration central to the political memory of the 1970s.
